Bangkok Flood Season Finder
Bangkok is 1.5 m above sea level and floods regularly. Most tourists ignore this; some districts flood every Sept–Oct. This tool flags the right districts and lets you check tide level on arrival.
Check
What this solves
Whether your chosen district floods at your travel time. The 2011 great flood was extreme, but 30–50 cm water in Khao San alleys happens every few years.
How to read
- Low-lying districts: Riverside, Khlong Toei, parts of Old City. Sept–Oct rain + high tide = knee-deep alleys.
- Mid districts: most tourist hotels here. Flood only in extreme events.
- High districts: above 2 m ASL. Rarely affected.
- King tides (full moon high tides) amplify floods — Sep/Oct full moons are the worst.
Limitations
- Bangkok flood infrastructure (BMA drainage, Chao Phraya barriers) has improved; current risk is lower than 2011.
- Tide predictions are not forecast beyond a week — check Hydro-Informatics Division for real-time.
FAQ
Should I avoid Bangkok in October?
Not necessarily. Flooding is localized — most of the city works fine. Avoid low-lying hotels and you'll be OK.
Does Sukhumvit flood?
Rarely — Asok and higher Sukhumvit (Soi 23+) are above 1.5 m ASL. Nana and Soi 4 occasionally see 10–20 cm puddles in extreme rain.
