Motorbike Rental Cost Trap
A 200 THB/day motorbike in Koh Phangan looks cheap until you add passport hold, "scratches found at return", insurance that doesn't cover you, and a hospital bill. This calculator models the real total — and flags the scam probability.
Inputs
What this solves
Three real questions:
- "The shop wants my passport — is this normal?"
- "Is the rental + 'insurance' cheaper than scooter-taxi for 5 days?"
- "What if I have a small accident — what's the realistic bill?"
How to read
- Rental total: day × days. Most shops also charge 50 THB/day for helmets (often "included" if asked).
- Fuel: 40 km/L for 110cc scooter, gas station at 40 THB/L. Plan ~50 km/day.
- Hospital risk: uninsured crash in Phuket can cost 60,000–400,000 THB at a private hospital. Public hospitals are cheaper but slower.
- Scam cost: if no video at pickup, ~30% chance of "we found a scratch" 1,500–5,000 THB hold.
Limitations
- Doesn't include Thai license requirement (technically required for 125cc+; rarely enforced, fines 500–1000 THB).
- Tourist insurance from credit card often excludes motorbikes entirely. Check your policy.
- Koh Samui and Phuket have actual police checkpoints on big bikes.
FAQ
Why do they want my passport?
It's their collateral. If you crash badly and owe the bike's value, they can hold your passport until you pay. Problem: if you lose it or it gets stolen while held, you're in trouble. Best alternative: leave a 5,000 THB cash deposit and a copy of your passport.
Is the insurance they sell real?
"Insurance" usually means third-party liability up to 100,000 THB and bike damage up to repair cost. It usually excludes: alcohol, unlicensed riders, and injury to YOU. Buy real travel insurance with motorcycle coverage before your trip.
Should I just use GrabBike?
For short trips yes — no helmet provided, but the driver's license is their issue. Cheaper than rental if you only need a few hours.
