BTS vs MRT vs Taxi — Bangkok
Most Bangkok travel blogs say "take the BTS to avoid traffic." That's true during rush hour and during monsoon rain. At 11pm with 4 people and luggage, the math flips. This calculator shows you exactly when.
Inputs
What this solves
Three real Bangkok decisions:
- Hotel near Ekkamai at 9 pm with 2 suitcases vs Sukhumvit Soi 11 — should I just take a taxi?
- Family of 4 going to Chatuchak on a Saturday — is the BTS cheaper than 2 taxis?
- Monsoon rain started in Asok — do I wait 25 min for the BTS or pay 250 THB for a tuk-tuk?
The calculator combines Bangkok Mass Transit published fares (2024–2026), a 35 THB taxi flag-fall plus 6 THB/km, surge factor 1.0 (since metered taxis don't surge), and a rush-hour/monsoon ETA model derived from average BTS/MRT headways and typical road speeds in those conditions.
How to read the results
- Fare (per person) — divide taxi total by group size. BTS/MRT fares don't change per person.
- Time — door-to-door, including wait + interchange + walk from station (estimate 8–12 min for last-mile walk).
- Rush multiplier — Bangkok roads slow ~40% in 4–8 pm; monsoon adds another 60–120% on top.
- The recommendation shows the cheapest or fastest option, plus when the other mode would win instead.
Limitations
- Doesn't model BTS closures (rare but real — usually announced the night before).
- Doesn't model Grab/Bolt surge (covered in Grab vs Bolt).
- Bangkok taxi drivers often refuse short trips, claim "meter broken," or insist on a destination they prefer. Add 50 THB minimum haggling tax mentally.
- BTS fares have increased in 2024–2025; we use the most recent published schedule but verify on the BTS website.
FAQ
Is the BTS really always cheaper than a taxi?
For a single rider on a 15 km trip: yes — 59 THB BTS vs ~140 THB taxi. For 3 people: ~210 THB taxi vs ~180 THB on a stored-value card. Taxi wins on door-to-door time when it's not rush hour.
Why does rain make such a big difference?
Flooding on Rama IV, Sathorn, and Phetchaburi regularly slows cars to walking pace. BTS runs unaffected except for station flooding (very rare). The 1.6–2.2× multiplier on the taxi ETA reflects this.
What about the Airport Rail Link?
ARL from Phaya Thai → Suvarnabhumi is 45 THB, 30 min, no traffic. From Khao San area add a 15-min taxi to Phaya Thai station. See the Airport Transfer tool.
